Hey Olivia! I love your name, my daughter is called Olivia, too! I’m in a bit of a creative funk too, so I’m just editing my upcoming poetry book (which is hard to do!! Harder than it was to edit my romcom) and trying to stop reading the news because it’s all insane everywhere and I want to run away!
Hi !! I recently have gotten into a creative frenzy after literally not having space to consume anything for quite a while !! For many years I did not create but I consumed. Like everything , we all have a balance and it’s not to be defined by anyone else. Do what feels right !!
This makes me feel so seen!!! As much as I love to create, I also love to consume (sometimes for overextended periods of time) and this made me feel less guilty about that. Creating is beautiful, but so is taking inspiration from all the beauty that’s already been created
“Consume with the hunger of a wolf rather than create with the sharpness of a butterknife” — I felt that. Thank you for naming the guilt and letting it breathe.
So good to know I’m not the only one who feels this way. I’ve been beating myself up for having writers block, so it’s nice to hear someone validate how I’ve been feeling <3
I think seeking other sources of inspiration during a creative dry spell is the best way to slowly regain inspiration! Also I NEED to try that lemon chicken orzo soup - sounds so good!
Oh and I’m the spirit of un-guilty consumption here are some things I have been consuming: the show Chef’s Table, noodles edition. Consuming people consuming and creating, what a juxtaposition! I love it. The book The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin. The first book I’ve read about the elusive nature of being a creative person. Another book called Praying like Monks; Living like Fools by Tyler Staton. I’ve been reading this slowly much like the way you soak in a good sunset or count the stars. For food, I’ve been eating a lot of fresh sourdough with dipping oil. Gluten free does not know my name nor will she ever. Dairy free however? We are practically joined at the hip. Also consuming: a lot of Aurora interviews (the singer), Tolkien movies, and reading Harry Potter with my kids.

This was a delightful read and so oddly validating. Thank you 🫶🏼
